The Heritage of
Marie Thumas

Marie Thumas is Belgian history! It all started with canned vegetables, today we take it to the next level: freshly harvested vegetables.
100% convenience, 100% taste!

An Iconic Brand

This first Belgian canning factory was established in 1886 by the Tournai engineer Edmond Thumas. The factory was located along the Leuven Canal in Wilsele. He named his company “Marie Thumas” after his wifes’ name, Marie Durieux. Starting with a modest team of just twenty, the workforce expanded to 600 women and 300 men by the forties. Beyond vegetable processing, the facility also produced a variety of fruit products and canned soups.
Quality Takes Priority
In the early years manual labor prevailed, but around the 1930s, Marie Thumas embraced automation. While vegetable processing remained partially manual, multifunctional machines also entered the scene. Quality always remained our highest priority, ensuring that only top-quality cans left the factory.
Marie Thumas is for Everyone
Even during those early times, Marie Thumas demonstrated a
progressive mindset. Alongside investments in machinery and automation, consideration was given to the well-being of the employees. A social house with amenities such as showers, changing rooms, and a cafeteria showcased a forward-thinking approach.
